dear dr tru i need some help with run defence.sometimes when i play online against players who use the more elite running backs madden has to offer i tend to struggle against them do you have any tips on a good base run d formation that will allow me to blitz when needed and also give decent coverage when i get opponents into 2nd and 3rd and long situations...im looking to give my opponent the same look on all occasions.

i like using 4 down line men with a cover 3 base and spread the rolb and lolb and tell them to blits so they cannot toss outside and going up the middle towards 2 dt and 1mlb
just make sure your certain its run lol
bringing a safety down into the box from the 4-6 base is good for run support but can get raped if they do a PA pass on it

tnx dan for the intell next time we play !!!!!!!!!!
freaking hard to run on you hehehehe.

well stu dan pretty much laid it out for a 4 man d-line.

for a 3-4 defense it pretty much depends on how the offense runs.
the formation they call should be an indication on what type of run might come.

to force a rb to go out side just pinch the d-line and make them do an inside rush.
then just follow your d-liners with your mlb to the rb.
with runs to the outside just spread your linebackers which will force a rb to cutback to a play where either a d-liner or a mlb is waiting.
key to this is playing with one of your mlb.
and be patience dont over pursue or drop back to far.
just look where the rb is going and try to meet him there while avoiding blocks.
also blitzing the outside lb from the side you know the run is going can be effective or doing the opposite if you got a really fast lber.

Coach Tru:

I have difficulty with my punting. I shouldn't have, because I do it quite a lot. However, the problem is this: if I try to punt it straight down field, I always seem to have one dude just ambling down the field, who will invaraibly get blocked and then the PR busts off a big run. So usually I try to kick it out of bounds - the problem is I'll usually overdo the angle and it ends up being a short punt.

Often my opponents seem to be able to get a couple of people downfield when they are punting and by the time the ball arrives are almost getting themselves familiar with Josh's butt.

Well while punting i just lower the arrows with 2 tabs and then move it to the right with 2 tabs then just full power. Lowering the arrow will booth it farhter but also shortens the hangtime.

To make sure you got guys downfield have some guys with at least 90 speed in depthchard slots 3 and 4 with cb, slot 3 mlb, slot 2 olb and slot 2 at safety.

Most important are cb tough.

People laugh when you pick people with high class speed but s*** overall but on special teams you see the differnce.

Tru knows about the special team benefits of having gunners with crazy speed on the outside, thats why i draft speed guys in round 5-7 with high hit power just for special teams.
On punts i normally tend to raise the arrow to there is more hang time giving my gunners the time to get down and either hit the ball carrier if hes feeling brave or just make him fair catch and live another day then just play strong D.

its also important on kick offs.

a long field of play gives your defense more opurtunity to make plays and makes it harder for opponents to score tds.

also very important is a kicker with 99 kpw.... Rhys Lloyd has around 30 touchbacks for me this season. Massively useful to have a kicker who can give opponents 2-3 less kickreturns a game, lowers the chances of giving up KR TD's and means there are a lot of long fields for their offence to face

agreed nev both kicker or punter with big legg means alot of difference on special teams.

use runs that suit your rb .
so dont use a power back on tosses or counter plays.

also hit the sprint button after you made the cut or when you hit the hole.
ima hit you with more later

Tru, is there a way to predict what your opponents defense is playing? ie. man or zone? or do you just guess

Post by tru11 on Thu 3 Jun 2010 - 19:37

Cb alignment is the primary key to see what d its going to be.
if you motion a receiver does the CB follow then its man does he stay its zone.
Also by looking at the safeties and /or olb you can see if its going to be a blitz or not.
ofcourse there are ways to get around certain things as there are plays that have both.
Also certain players will play pressure d when they blitz.

i just look at what d they pick against my offense and where all the defenders line up.
Its then pretty easy to see if its man.
if you got 3 wr on 1 side and you see 1 wr is marked by a lb while there is a cb on the other side marking a te or rb then you know its zone.

easiest way to figure out zone or man is having a couple receivers on 1 side.
like 2 wr a te and 1 rb on the right side and 1 wr on the left side.
if the d makes the proper adjustments to cover those players you will know its man and if you see a defender just standing there then you will know its zone.
If they dont make the adjustments while its man cov you will have a mismatch and an easy completion.

hope this makes some sense lolz

Yeah it does tru thanks, I think I will have to try it out in a game for it to make perfect sense. When you say look at the Safeties are you talking about that they are more to the sideline (like they are in man) and not more central (like they are in cover 2 or 3) also whenever I press Triangle---Left Stick left to show a blitz the FS comes to the middle of the pitch while the SS moves up toward the OLB. If you see that with the FS deep on his own central and the SS right up close to the LBs is that always just "show blitz" or is there a D formation which looks like this? Often when I see this formation I audible to a PA pass and then all the D players are in zone. Does that make sense?

the 4-6 or 3-3-5(3 safety 2cb) formation shows that.
often when people show this in other formations that arent the above they wont blitz and its zone.
but bap the best way to figure what a person is doing is pay attention to there play calling on the first drives .
often they will show what they like to do with what formation.
remembering those formations and if they where man or zone( and what zone) its easier for you to pick them apart when you remember it.
think about audible or hot route or motion.

well with safetys if they blitz you will see them slowly walk to line of scrimmage from their safey position when they gonna blitz.
they will usually be very close to the line of scrimmage at one point if you wait long enough.
not many people use safety blitzes so i dont think you will see them often.

well with linebackers you can see how they stand pre snap.
and if they are moving to the line of scrimmage pay attention to the SS.
If he stays at his safety spot they will probaly blitz.
if he comes to the line of scrimmage its most likely show blitz.

but these are just little things to pay attention to best is to just recognize the plays and formation you opponent pick and remember them when you see them again. it wil always be a guessing game but these things just make it easier to guess right and avoid mistakes.
