As I've said to couple of people

There was a lot of positive stuff. Pressing etc etc
But also some negative aspects and a lot seem to just sweep under carpet because we won just.

Kane apart from goals was missing, nothing like his spurs play
Glad not taking corners lol.even he probe asses himself and gotta do more as was just plodding around. Would be nice to see him and raheem doing old switcheroo now and again.

Trippier was really impressive
Cheek and rash coming on we improved
Harry had blip got away with but improved hugely rest game.
Penalty was a joke so is VAR.

Ultimately to be champions got finish these chances and not keep getting into these situations. And there room to learn and grow to get to our peak.we got W main thing

And as past greats,no time to celebrate onto Panama.

Dele will be rested and sterling and young

Cheek, rash and rose start next game. Dier maybe for hendo.

Main thing is victory achieved in tough conditions. 3 points more than Germany have at this point. Panama will make it hard as well but they look wobbly in defence. Unleash Vardy please!

I didn't think England were as impressive as some have made out. Obviously, the positive was Kane's finishing, especially for the 2nd goal. The more you look at that, the more you realise what a small gap there was between the keeper and the post.
But as for Sterling.......ugh! Lingard's efforts were pretty awful as well. Those chances will need taking when we face the likes of Belgium.

The defence worries me too. Maguire got away with a dreadful pass at one point and you can't do that against quality opposition. My main concern was how we fared in adversity. We all know the penalty was a ludicrous decision but unfortunately with dodgy referees that you always get in the World Cup (saw one from the Gambia in a game the other day who was atrocious. Gambia? That footballing hotbed? Yes) these things are going to happen and you have to dust yourselves down and get on with it. I felt that after they equalised, all the old frailties and lack of self-belief was again evident.

Hopefully we can see off Panama: if we don't then it will be a bigger embarrassment than the Iceland debacle in the Euros in 2016.

I think we do. Thinking ahead to who we may/may not draw in later rounds should not be on the agenda. Play to win. The only problem is that the game has become meaningless and not a good test of where we are as a team, because both teams will rest players.

For what it's worth, I am not buying the hype. I didn't think our performance against a pub team was anything to rejoice about. The fact we conceded a goal - and could have conceded others - is a worry IMO. I don't like our defence and in particular don't like Maguire.

What a load of rubbish.
It proved Belgium Reserves were better than England Reserves. The worrying thing was no one did anything to make Southgate want to keep them in the team at the expense of the starters in the first two games. Rashford was dreadful - he blew a real opportunity to make an impression.
Colombia was the team I wanted to avoid: I thought they were unlucky against Japan in the first game and it would probably have been a lot different had they not been down to 10 men after 4 minutes.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was all over on Tuesday night.

Re: World Cup

I think the Colombians are certainly not to be taken lightly. I'm certainly not suggesting England tried to not win. However, the fact is if they had won or drawn the opposition would've been Japan, followed by Brazil, in all likelihood. At least with Colombia, it's an easier game on paper and they would then play the winner or Switzerland and Sweden in the quarters. So, realistically with the players England have, they should be reaching at least the semi final against Spain/Russia/Croatia/Denmark.

Last time England got that far in a world cup I believe Gary Lineker shat himself on the pitch.

Re: World Cup

Post by GBDawg1 on Fri 29 Jun 2018, 7:57 am

I think we can rule out Denmark and the Soviet Union. The latter's World Cup will be over in the last 16. If we do manage to beat Colombia, then I don't fancy Sweden at all in the next round. We have a poor record against them.
Croatia looked good until they played Iceland - I thought they got battered and Iceland were very unlucky. However, I suppose game 3 when you have already qualified is difficult to get motivated for.
My biggest fear is our defence, plus we don't have a world class goalkeeper. I prefer Buttland myself, but seems Southgate likes Pickford for whatever reason.
Thought Alexander-Arnold has a reasonable game last night, although some of his free kicks and corners left a lot to be desired.

Re: World Cup

No surprise that Brasco is defending his Everton player.

Moving on, was anyone impressed with us last night? Do you recall Ospina having to make any great saves? No, neither do I.

On the positive side, I thought Maguire had his best game of the tournament and yes, Pickford made two decent saves, one just before the goal and one in the shoot-out, but that is what he is there for. Believe it or not, all goalkeepers make saves occasionally. In the shoot-out, I would have been happier had Pickford been in the faces of the Colombian players before they took the penalties, the way you see the others (eg Schmeichel) doing, rather than just retreating to his line.

Sterling was his usual self: he has pace and not a lot else. Ran down blind alleys and his first touch was appalling most of the time. Why did Vardy come on? Was totally ineffective in the game vs Belgium and did nothing last night either - and didn't even take a penalty! A leading striker? No.

Alli didn't look fit to me and I thought he was going to get subbed at half time. I'm not sure he's been fit from game 1: and if he's not then Southgate shouldn't be taking chances.

Bottom line: I'm not polishing the sideboard to accommodate the trophy just yet, particularly as we face one of our bogey teams in the QF.

Is there such a thing as a world class keeper at the minute?

I'm just saying Pickford's the best keeper we have at the moment and he proved that last night with the save of the tournament.

And if you think that was a camera save Matty then you were clearly not watching the same game I was.

Re: World Cup

Speaking as an ex-goalkeeper, I don't think that either save was "for the cameras".
Pickford is an ok goalkeeper but he is not world class. He may yet become world class, because he is young by goalkeeping standards. Remember Shilton was nearly 41 when he played at Italia 90 (he was over the top by then IMO and at the time I thought Chris Woods should have played, who was at his peak) and there are other examples such as Dino Zoff, who lifted the WC when he was 40.

I'd also take issue that he "proved it with the save of the tournament". There have been a number of fine goalkeeping displays in the past couple of weeks that have included far more than just a couple of saves. I hope that Pickford does play well because he will have a lot more to do against Sweden than he did last night.

Right now though, I believe Buttland is a better all-round keeper.

Just seen the overhead shot of Pickford's save from Uribe, and it sppeared it was going wide. Check out the daily World cup catch-up on the BBC site

Just like de gea at times its for cameras.

Belgium could just stepped across and pushed over or caught it.

Last night it was spectacular save from his position, but definitely could been avoided.,imo he had time to catch that didn't have to dive.
dived instead. Time took to get his hand where it was, could took more steps to have whole body there instead.

I'm more an traditional GK instead of acrobatic for camera GK.making it look harder then really is
