Week 16 Game Reports

Post by GBDawg1 on Mon 01 May 2017, 10:18 pm

Cleveland 34-30 New Orleans

The Browns came from behind in a stunning 4th quarter recovery by scoring 21 points - 14 of which were in the final 45 seconds to secure an extremely lucky road win to take them into a final week showdown against their divisional rivals, the Ravens.

Saints' fans will have left the stadium scratching their heads in how they managed to lose a game they had controlled until the final couple of minutes. The home team had dominated the ground game, the aerial game and picked the Browns' defense apart at will - other than the fact that the Cleveland defense managed to force 5 turnovers in the game, two of which resulted in defensive TDs.

The Saints scored on a long first drive, with Jameson Keith running the ball in on a toss to put the home side ahead. Nearly 7 minutes had elapsed before the Browns got the ball on offense, but they didn't have it for long as Bortles tried to force a pass in to Coleman, with Damian Swann making an easy pick. But Cousins got stripped as he dropped back to pass and Terence Williams, signed from the Chiefs on deadline day, recovered the fumble and took the ball back to the house. Parkey then dragged the PAT wide to leave the Saints marginally ahead.

Back came the Saints, who looked set to score until Cousins was picked off by Joe Haden in the end zone, who inexplicably ran out and got tackled at the 1 yd line. And then, on the next play, Bortles was dumped in the end zone for a safety.

It didn't take long for New Orleans to go further ahead when Cousins found Michael Thomas on a swing pass and good downfield blocking cleared the way for him to take it to the end zone to make the score 16-6. A Barnidge score before the break reduced the arrears to set the game up nicely for the 2nd half, with the Browns set to receive.

Half: Cleveland 13-16 New Orleans

A great first drive for the visitors looked set to put them either into the lead or to at least tie the score, until that man Swann again jumped a pass intended for Maclin to leave the Browns empty-handed on their drive inside the Saints' red zone. Worse was to come as WR Brandin Cooks got free over the top to snag a bomb from Cousins to put the Saints ahead by 10 again. The Browns were forced to punt on their next drive but a bizarre INT by Christian Kirksey at the LoS from Cousins was returned to paydirt to reduce the gap to 3 yet again.

But not for long, as Cody Fleener snagged a catch and run for 62 yds to leave the Browns looking sunk. Bortles managed to drive his side downfield but when Jeremy Maclin scored to make it a 3 pont game once more, there were only 42 seconds left on the clock.

The onside kick attempt resulted in a huge melee, with the Browns somehow recovering the ball. a few plays later, Bortles hooked up with Corey Coleman to put Cleveland ahead for the first time in the game. Only 12 seconds were left and a shell-shocked Saints offense could do nothing more.

A sour note for the Browns was that Josh Gordon was knocked out of the game and has been placed on IR and will miss the playoffs
