Week 4 Reports

Post by GBDawg1 on Mon 20 Mar 2017, 10:49 pm

Tampa Bay 25-20 Cleveland

The Browns slumped to their first defeat of the season in a disappointing display against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After two back-to-back road wins, where Blake Bortles had posted unprecedented stats, the Cleveland signal-caller came back to earth with a bump, throwing a pick 6 with the very first play of the game. The play not only set the tone of the game, but proved in the end to be the difference between the two sides.

After TJ Carrie had returned the opening play for a 31 yd TD, Bortles threw another pick on the home team's next drive on a pass intended for Gary Barnidge, where SS Bradley McDouglad jumped the route. This pick was turned into a FG for Roberto Aguuayo, before the Browns finally got on the board, courtesy of a Cody Parkey FG. Back came the Bucs with another FG of their own, before Parkey closed the deficit to 6 as he hit another FG just before the interval after a solid defensive stand from Tampa Bay.

Half:Tampa Bay 12-6 Cleveland

The 3rd quarter was a fairly cagey affair, before an ill-advised all-out blitz on 3rd and 1 left Bucs TE Javonte Booker wide open and able to make an easy catch and run for 52 yards into daylight. This had been in response to another turnover where the overworked Josh Gordon fumbled inside the Tampa Bay 5 and turned the ball over to the Bucs. But the home team wasn't done just yet, and TDs from Systeek Boatwright, who was to convert his first reception of the season into points, and a short catch from Josh Gordon, propelled the Browns into an unlikley late lead of 1 point. But WInston got to work and with unerrin accuracy, found a couple of deep passes to Mike Evans and with not much time left, Doug Martin, who had otherwise had a fairly ordinary day, trundled across the line for the decisive score. Bortles tried a few heave-hos but on 3rd down was sacked to end a disappointing afternoon for the home team.
The key to the Bucs victory was their 3-0 turnover ratio, which resulted in poiints for the visitors on each occasion.

Los Angeles Rams 1221 Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta come out with a W in a sloppy affair.

Story of the game:
Atlanta coughed the ball up a total of five times on fumbles, while Los Angeles fumbled twice alongside 5 Jared Goff INTs.  Atlanta’s rookie QB, Lee Roth, surrendered 3 of the fumbles, while only one was recovered by the team wearing red.  Crucially, Roth recovered his own fumble on the 1yd line of the Rams immediately prior to his first score.  Rookie RB Jaron Jean-Baptiste also coughed up the ball, with LA recovering, and electric KR Devin Fuller also gave the ball away to the Rams on a KR.
Atlanta opened the scoring with a 5 yard QB keeper from Roth in the first quarter.  LA struggled offensively with both star CB Desmond Trufant and FS Ricardo Allen blanketing top WR Tavon Austin.  Austin would finish the day with 6 catches for 101 yards and a TD, but also was the target on four of Goff’s INTs, including a spectacular play by Allen (5’9”) who boxed out Austin (5’8”) for the pick.
Atlanta spread the game wide open in the 2nd quarter via two explosive plays.  First, Roth dumped off a screen to incumbent RB starter Tevin Coleman who raced away untouched 74 yards for the score.  Soon after, second year RB out of Clemson D.J. Lee-Steere, who was signed away from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a four year deal in the offseason, found a crease in the defnese and sprinted 63 yards untouched for his 2nd explosive TD of the season.  Rumours in the ATL are rife that this young man may be the future at the RB position with Coleman a restricted-FA at the end of the season.  Dylan Breckner kicked the PAT on both occasions, but reverted to his middling form missing a total of three FGs on the day of distances 20 yards, 44 yards and 54 yards.
21 points was all Atlanta needed in the end.  A spirited comeback from Goff who made some great throws.  Goff threw 2 TDs, one to Todd Gurley in the flat from short yardage and the second to Tavon Austin, from just inside the redzone.  It was a tough day for the Rams O-Line, as they (like many teams) struggled to block the combo of star OLB Kaelin Holt and Vic Beasley Jnr.  Atlanta only finished with two sacks of Goff, both from Holt.  Holt forced a fumble and recovered it himself on one sack.

MVP: Calvin Craft CB – 2 Tackles, 2 INTs

After the off-season trade of CB Dareon Riley to the Browns, the player selected 32 places after Riley was forced into a starting role and his began the season well.  These two INTs were his first of his career for the 112th overall pick (R4-16) in the 2017 draft.
