Week 1 Reports

Post by bigjimmyaston on Thu 09 Mar 2017, 12:39 pm

Atlanta Falcons (27) v (24) Pittsburgh Steelers

As I am sure you have heard many times ' a game of two halves' well this was certainly one of them.

The Steelers came in as always with a new season 'hope' but this was shorted lived in the 1st half. In truth, the Steelers did very little except punt a lot of the ball! Whereas the Falcons with their new shiny draft pick Lee Roth as starting QB looked nothing short of wonderful. They played hard on defense and the mixture of good outside running, QB runs and a selection of passing they managed to shoot into a 24-0 lead by the half.

The Steelers had that all so familiar 'here we go again' sighs ringing round the stadium but after Aston administered a can of woop ass the mighty machine came out to play in the second half.

They managed to score an early field goal to offer some sort of hope albeit very slim and then the defense decided to show up after a 1st half where they might as well sat on the side-line.

The Steelers managed to score 2 TD's with passes from Big Ben (still going strong after 96 years on the field time) before the Falcons scored a FG. The score going into the 4th quarter was 27-17. The Steelers with the bit between their teeth managed to force a fumble from the very impressive Roth and it was game on! A few moments later and the always reliable Brown was dancing in the end zone to bring the scores to 27-24 and you could hear the noise from the crowd 'could it be'...

The Steelers did manage to get the ball back late into the 4th quarter but were stopped when the normally reliable TE Green got run over by a tank and fumbled the ball for the Falcons to kneel out the rest of the game.

This actually turned out to be a classic after such a one sided first half!

Key Stats from the game;

L.Roth 12/16 219 1 1
B.Roethlisberger 13/24 242 3 0

L.Bell 16 108 0 55
L.Roth 6 31 1 15
J.Jean-Baptiste 8 83 1 59

MVP for the game: Lee Roth - showed excellent composure and maturity for a player on his NFL debut.

That tank tore his shoulder making that tackle and is now injured for a few weeks Sad Two best DBs with only two shoulders between them.

Great game

Oakland 3 - 19 Cleveland

FirstEnergy Stadium witnessed a season-opener that wouldn't have got the fans of either team excited and hopeful of success in the coming season.

The Browns managed to eke out a win, but it was little thanks to QB Blake Bortles, who carried on where he left off last season, throwing a total of 4 interceptions in the game, or to their running game. The visitors' running game was equally unimpressive, matched only by a number of unfathomable drops by the Raiders' receivers.

Oakland took the lead with a FG from Nugent after Bortles was picked off at the line of scrimmage with the very first play of the game and this set the tone for the first period, as Bortles was picked off again and Parkey got in on the act with a couple of missed FGs. Finally the Browns went ahead in the 2nd quarter, courtesy of a 60 yard catch and run from veteran Gary Barnidge.

When the Raiders did knock on the door to score, a wayward pass from Derek Carr was picked off by Free Agency debutant Aqib Talib in the end zone.

The Browns were to stretch their lead when  Christian Kirksey blasted Derek Carr inside his own 20, the ball coming loose and being scooped up by Ishmail Terrill, who jogged in for the score. Parkey, who was having a dreadful day, then missed the extra point before adding a couple of 4th quarter FGs to put the game out of reach.

A bad news footnote for the Browns: Jeremy Maclin, who was signed on transfer deadline day last season and sustained an injury after a couple of games, has again been sidelined after taking a big hit. Medics claim he will be out for 8 weeks, presenting the Browns with a problem at wideout.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Indianapolis Colts

It was all over when.....The Eagles attempted an onside kick with a minute left in regulation and trailing 20-17. The Ryan Succop kick was gratefully collected by TY Hilton and the Colts took a couple of knee's to secure the first win of the season.

Game ball.....No absolute standout player but both Hilton for the home team and Matthews for the travelling Eagles both had good games with Hilton recording seven catches for 90 yards and a TD while Matthews snagged four catches for 82 yards and a TD.

Key stat.....The Colts defense came alive early in the third quarter with linebacker Sio Moore intercepting Carson Wentz on 3rd and 1 at the Indianapolis 49. Moore took the ball the entire 51 yards to tie the game at 10-10. Wentz would throw another two picks before the day was done with Colts rookies Jimmy Leno and Eugene Fair having debuts to remember.

Noteworthy.....Philadelphia were called for three face mask penalties while the Colts were called for one which infuriated both the head coaches and fans.....There were no injury concerns for both teams as the Colts host the Redskins in week two while Philadelphia host the Falcons.....The Colts had attempted a FG with the chance to extend their lead by 13 points late in the 4th quarter but the kick was blocked and returned by Eagles A.J Bouye for a Philadelphia TD and after the successful point after, the lead was only three points.

Final Score

Philadelphia Eagles 17 - 20 Indianapolis Colts
