Week 1 Game reports

Post by H64mmy on Fri 16 Dec 2016, 8:48 pm

Jets @ Bucs

once again I missed some of the game. Most of the 4th quarter. It was a big part of the game as well. Where the game imploded on the Buccaneers. There was another pick 6 in there somewhere.

The Bengals came into this full of confidence after a good run last season, and playing against a Patriots team that’s no longer spearheaded by Tom Brady.

That confidence grew after forcing the Patriots to punt on their first possession, and the Bengals hit back with a 62 yard run by Bernard that would have gone to the house if Bernard could have outrun Harmon. The Bengals were only able to follow the big play up with a FG. Another field goal for the Bengals was matched by the Patriots to take the score to 6-3 at half time.

A big hit by Hightower on Eifert forced the ball loose on the opening drive of the half, and the loose ball was recovered by Logan Ryan to give the Patriots good field position. They took full advantage: Garoppolo hit Sanchez Meachem for a 2 yard TD to give the Patriots a 10-6 lead. The bengals added a field goal in the 3rd to make it 10-9 going into the final quarter.

A good drive by Garoppolo took the Patriots deep into Bengals territory and a chance to add a TD that would take the Patriots a step closer to victory. On 2nd & 6 at the Bengals 10, with 4:31 on the clock, Garoppolo was sacked by Geno Atkins for a 9 yard loss. 3rd & 14 on CIN 18, Garoppolo found Malcolm Mitchell who was stopped 1 yard short of the 1st down marker.

The Patriots opted to play safe and added the 3 points to take a 13-9 lead with 3:05 on the clock.

Andy Dalton led the Bengals on a great drive - one of the only times they were able to move the ball against a very good New England defence. With 16 seconds left on the clock, Dalton had the Bengals 1st & goal on the New England 4 yard line with 2 timeouts. The Bengals attempted to punch it in twice with Jeremy Hill but had no joy.

3rd & goal on the 2 yard line with 9 seconds on the clock, Dalton looks for rookie Pettis, who had the ball in his hands only to have it knocked away by Jamie Collins.

The game comes down to 1 last play, and Dalton hits AJ Green who gets all but a few inches of the 2 yards needed for a TD. Harmon and Collins combined for the game saving tackle.

Patriots win a classic 13-9.

Game ball goes to the New England defence who stood firm all day.

Well played Matty. Great game!
