Cheltenham Festival

Post by patriotscpfc on Tue 09 Feb 2016, 7:12 pm

Anyone have any interest in the horses? Whether watching or gambling?

I'll be there all 4 days, I used to write up some previews and reviews for the local papers, so I'll try and give a few tips on here to have the EAFL people in clover!

I have an interest although only a slight one these days. I just don't have enough time to do it now and so for the last 15 years or so I have only been an occasional bettor and joined the ranks of "mug punters" I suppose.

I'll throw a couple of my early single bets into here anyway

Lets Dance (Bowie song!) in the Triumph Hurdle at 16/1 each way.

Zabana in the JLT Novices Chase at 20/1 each way.

Shantou Village in the Albert Bartlett at 8/1.

The time is here!

Supreme - Min (5/2). Hype horse, has looked very impressive and his form has been franked repeatedly in recent months. Back him in the morning as the bookies will be out to get him.

Arkle - Douvan (2/5) wins, simple as. Sizing John (9/1, 3/1 w/o) is a good proposition each way or in the W/O Douvan market. Strong jumper, last run can easily be forgiven and will like this ground.

Ultima - The Young Master (14/1). A tough race to study, but I come down on a horse who followed the same route as last year's winner for the same trainer. Good form, looks well handicapped and will like drying ground.

Champion Hurdle - Nichols Canyon (6/1). Forgiving his last run is difficult, but if he gets an easy lead, he is a real player in a wide open race. I don't think Annie Power has the speed, or the fluid jumping to be a Champion Hurdle winner.

Mares Hurdle - Vroum Vroum Mag (11/10) should win this easily, she could be as good as any other mare and is unbeaten. I've taken a punt on Bitofapuzzle (14/1) e/w as she finished 3rd last year and reverts back to hurdles after a few bad experiences over fences.

National Hunt Chase - I've taken a punt on Southfield Royale (8/1) who will be ridden by expert amateur Nina Carberry and will almost certainly stay the trip. The only issue with this selection as well as the with the current favourite is that the record of 6 year olds in the 4 mile race is awful.

CHAPS Handicap - My original selection has been taken out, so I will settle on Bouvreuil (14/1). He performed much better when stepped up to 2m3f  and was then taken back to 2m after that in his Festival prep run

NAP: Min

E/W Shot: The Young Master

2 winners (not that I like to claim the very short ones) plus Sizing John traipsing in behind Douvan as well as 2 big-priced placed horses is a good day for me.

Neptune - Yorkhill (5/2). I had originally backed A Toi Phil (8/1) who I think will improve greatly, but I'll be taking on the favourite with Yorkhill who has excellent novice form and will love stepping up to 2 1/2 miles

RSA - No More Heroes (5/2). You could make a profit backing the front 2 in the market as I think they're a long way clear of the field, but I've got with the Irish horse who looked a natural born chaser from the moment he stepped on a racecourse

Coral Cup - Diamond King (10/1). A tough handicap, but I go with the Gordon Elliott plot horse, possibly over-weighted badly by the British handicapper and will need to improve again, but j can't see him being out of the frame.

Queen Mother Champ Chase - If Un De Sceaux (10/11) stays on his feet, he wins this race. Special Tiara (20/1) would be my choice each way though as he may frighten the quirky favourite at the front and will enjoy the fast-drying ground

Cross Country Chase - Josie's Orders (3/1) Has won both Cross Country races at Cheltenham this season and is trained by the master of these races in Bolger and the jockey you want in Nina Carberry

Fred Winter - There's a lot of unproven form in this race and I liked Campeador before the weights were revealed, I have since moved onto the hype horse Diego Du Charmil (15/2) as my choice, and Nicholls has a great record in this race.

Champion Bumper - New To This Town (12/1) is only the 3rd runner in this race for his trainer, with the previous 2 being well fancied. He has had his form franked recently and looks the type of horse that will be well-backed.

NAP: Josie's Orders

E/W Shot: New To This Town

Sorry, I thought I had posted it!

I was running around celebrating Limini as I had backed her months ago at 7/1 and had the treble up. A shame that Zabana threw Davy off at the start of the day.

And Cause of Causes coming in at 12/1 was the cherry on the top for me. I'm well up with a day to go!

Friday's to follow!

Thurs: Treble wins, Cause of Causes wins, Bloody Mary placed.

Triumph - Let's Dance (12/1). Should be well suited by Cheltenham and not making the pace after staying on well last time out. Very open race.

County - I've gone with a pair of McManus horses, with a punt on 16/1 shot Modus, with course form and well handicapped too. I've also had a little on Great Field (7/1) who looks potentially very good for Willie Mullins.

Albert Bartlett - In a race with a warm favourite, I've gone for Shantou Village (5/1) to perform much better on rock hard ground, whether or not he can overtake the difficult to pass favourite remains to be seen!

Gold Cup - For 12 months, I have wanted to see Don Poli (5/1) in this race. Some say he is slow, some say he will be out-paced. I think he is lazy and clever. He will not fall. He will be the horse travelling the best up the hill. I love the horse and this will hopefully his best ever performance.

Foxhunters - On The Fringe (3/1) looks a very solid favourite in this. It looks a weaker race than last year where he won by a mile. The firm ground and recovery of a tough end to season is the only issue.

Martin Pipe - Squouateur (6/1) The one Gordon Elliott runner not battered by the handicapper and ridden by the expert Conditional jockey Jack Kennedy. I think this may be my bet of the festival.

Grand Annual - Next Sensation (9/1) is on the same mark as last year when winning comfortably, the connections seem confident in this and that is more than good enough for me.

NAP: Leave At Dawn

E/W shot: Let's Dance
